Is Your Organic Dog Shampoo Really Organic?
You need dog shampoo. You head to Amazon.com and type in the search bar "organic dog shampoo". The search results in 27 dog shampoos - all claim "all natural" and "organic".
Less than half of them (@ 30%) are, in fact, organic.
A recent survey conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the USDA found that consumers mistakenly believe products with the word "organic" on the product or in the marketing materials meet government organic standards. That is not the case.
These organic imposters that garner more than 60% of the "organic dog shampoo" market rely on tactics that make you think they are organic:
- Use "organic" in the title of their product
- Boast one or two organic ingredients so you'll not pay attention to the other ingredients
- Use "green" sounding ingredients like "Naturally Derived from Coconut" or "Coconut Based" [Fact: These are considered synthetic ingredients]
Don't let the marketing trick you. Many of these synthetic ingredients are linked to itchy skin, hormone disruption and cancer.
How can they get away with this?
Quite simply, unless a product is certified organic, there are no regulations around the word "organic", the purity of the product's ingredients, the text on the label, or requirements to list ingredients.
Certified organic products pet grooming products are the only product that do have government oversight. They are safer and better as they are a higher standard of quality for your furry family member!
